Maria Siorba started photographing in 2014 while still studying Fine Arts at Athene. Also having an educational background in graphic design and communication, the subjects of her work reflect on how we communicate and get inspired by the difficulties all humans encounter in expressing themselves, especially under intense emotions such as love and fear.
In Semitones, in the silence, she asks questions regarding existential and psychological aspects. ‘’Where does the sound of a restless spirit go? What are the shapes in which our hidden desires appear out in the world and how do they determine our path? How can we share and portray emotions accurately, so they can be equally felt by others, considering all the different personalities and moods out there? Is it possible at all?’’ The result of asking these questions lead to this series of contrasting black and white polaroid pictures, with roughness and softness, movement and stills, and environment and people. Where she hopes that our own messages play the role of bridges that connect to different places and worlds.
