Marco del Zotto was born and lives in Venice, a city to which he is deeply linked. Graduated in Photography of Cultural Heritage at ISIA in Urbino, he deals with corporate photography and portraiture. Gifted with great sensitivity to the use of light and particular attention to the subject portrayed, Del Zotto has been carrying out some long-term personal projects for years, both on the contemporary landscape and on portraiture.

In ‘The Secret Gardens’, he is exploring familiar places, some even a few meters from his home, and his ability to still get lost in them. By highlighting some elements while obscuring others, he investigates the meaning of places and their permanence. Del Zotto’s imagery highlighted with lack of people encourages a playful approach where the viewer adopts the role of a detective, in search for narratives and certain clues. The locations are explored primarily at night and their beauty is revealed through the use of artificial lights and bright colours. The aesthetics provide the images with a cinematic feel, suddenly, turning them into speculative landscapes pregnant with mystery.

Are we then witnessing fiction or reality? In a way, Del Zotto not only puts into question the respective landscapes but additionally, the medium of photography itself and its ability to represent reality. However, by prioritizing personal experience, he leaves it up to us – to accept Del Zotto’s invitation and to join him on his nocturnal journeys.

You can meet Del Zotto's work and other 99 great photography talents on FRESH EYES book.
